For nearly 50 years, Highland Park High School has hosted a very special event biennially, FOCUS on the Arts. This year’s theme is “Imagine the Possibilities” and will run for three days and three nights from April 8th through April 11th. I remember participating in FOCUS as an HPHS student in the mid-80’s, and it was truly a remarkable event–my highlight was attending a presentation by Oprah Winfrey.
This unique celebration exposes high school students to a wide variety of genres within the field of the arts through performances and workshops featuring accomplished artists in different arenas, including visual and performing arts and media.
Many alumni of HPHS will be in residence, including actor Gary Sinise, screenwriter Alan Loeb, David Rudman from “Sesame Street” and Hollywood Casting director of the Oscar-nominated film “True Grit,” Rachel Tenner (Congrats Rachel!).
There will also be several performances that will be open to the public.
The festival was kicked off last night with FOCUS’ “Night at the Movies,” a new program which was conceptualized by the high school’s students and featured student films.
2011’s FOCUS on the Arts promises to be amazing and I highly encourage everyone in the community to take part. FOCUS is a truly unique time at Highland Park High School, rich with experiences for the students to participate in, learn from and enjoy. I am again impressed with my community’s high school and what it offers – I can’t wait for my future Giants to participate!
