What are QR codes?

Quick Response codes, or QR codes, are 2D bar codes that orignated as a tracking mechanism for auto parts in the 1990s.

Now these funny little checkerboard symbols can be found everywhere from newspaper and magazine ads to movie posters to business cards to bumper stickers to food packaging…and all you need is a smart phone with internet capabilities and a code reader. Some phones come with code readers already installed, on others you will need to download an app, such as Red Laser (my preference — it
can also be used for comparison pricing when shopping and SO much more!)

Just snap a “picture” of the QR code with your code reader, and you will be directed to a specific website. Try it on any of the QR codes in this blog.

There are so many ways these codes will help businesses communicate with their customers. For example, an ad for a fashion line in a women’s magazine might have a QR code that links to scenes from that line’s most recent runway show. A code on a movie poster can take you to a preview of that movie.

As a real estate agent, I love the marketing options these codes offer. I give each of my listings it own QR code which is linked to that listing’s website. I can then put the QR code on printed materials, my website, or even on the For Sale sign in front of the house — if you drive by, just snap the code, and you’ll immediately have all the home’s information literally in your hands. No need to type a URL into your phone’s search bar or wait ’til you get home to use your computer – or even call anyone!

QR codes bridge the gap between print media and online information. They’re a great way to get the information you want delivered instantly to you on your smartphone. Now that sales of smartphones have surpassed sales of personal computers, there will no doubt be increased demand for mobile-friendly content and an increased use of QR codes. And they’re evolving from the generic black and white pattern to completely personalized ones with any design you can create or think of.

Keep you eye out for QR codes – you’re going to be seeing them everywhere!
